fo: snowdrift cable hat

A lot of my favourite knitting blogs, such as Knitted Bliss, Foof & Faff (now Elise and Life), and Woollen Wilderness (to name but a few), often share FO posts detailing their most recently completed knits, or those that have fastened/finished off. And I've needed to get my but in gear for a long time on Ravelry and share more of my projects on there in order to try and talk to knitters around the world more readily and so I hope to be able to share FO posts with you moving forward in an attempt to encourage myself to use Ravelry more (and to show off the projects I am proud of too!)

And so in true knitters style I've already deviated from my planned January knits and this weekend I fastened off a hat for myself!

I cast this hat on yesterday and had it finished this morning! Hats work up so quickly. I wanted to use up some yarn that I already have and for Christmas I bought myself 2 huge skeins of this lovely Aran tweed to make a cardigan. I knew that I would have too much so I used this to whip up a hat, and I used a contrasting colour in DK weight yarn for the pompom. In order to match the gauge I needed to use 2 strands of the yarn simultaneously and it transpires that tweed does not like this. I managed to knit the hat up (and let me tell you it is a lovely warm hat) but knitting my swatches for the gauge, casting on, and cabling were all very difficult tasks with this textured yarn doubled up.

Having said that I am very pleased with the result. The hat fits and is warm - it doesn't fall off my head and dad says it makes my hair look nice, so that will do! The pattern uses simple cabling (forward and back) and though it recommends double pointed needles I worked this up very happily on my circular needles. If I were to make this again I would buy the appropriate yarn because I think, even with all my tension squares, I didn't quite nail the tension and the shape of the crown of the hat isn't as soft as I would like, but it still looks good (I hope you agree!)

so...many...selfies

You can find my Ravelry project page here - though I am having trouble uploading pictures at the moment.

Tomorrow I am hoping to start working on the Owl hat knitting pattern! That is if I can pull myself away from Kingdom Hearts 2 after work...what are you working on at the moment?
